Title of Study: The Use of AI in Craft and Technical roles across Film, TV and Games

About the researcher and the project:

I am a lecturer at Queen’s University (Belfast) conducting a research project funded by NI screen to investigate the use, knowledge and perception of AI by individuals working within the Film, TV and Games industry.

What is involved:

The project, funded by NI Screen, will deliver an initial 10 minute survey with questions across the following thematic areas:

• Participant background
• Awareness of relevant AI technologies
• Usage of AI technologies
• The role of AI in creative industry on society
• Perceived Benefits and Barriers of AI
• Future Trends and Innovations in AI

These questions will be asked on a likert scale with responses with “Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Neither Agree nor Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree”, with options to expand upon some of the questions with further comments. The survey will be complete online on a form hosted on Microsoft OneDrive.

Analysis will be carried out only on aggregated data and never on an individual basis. The analysis will score and report the responses to questions on a question by question basis, i.e. “20 out of 35 participants said they strongly agree with the statement, “I am familiar with the organisations that are influential in AI.”. Comparisons between groups will be analysed with statistical tests such as chi square test used to compare answers across different genders, ages, background industries (Film / TV / Games) and other participant background questions. Any thematic analysis or quotes based on qualitative data will be carried out on anonymized data that will not make it possible to identify study participants.

After the survey results have been analysed a 2 hour focus group will be conducted on QUB campus which you will also be invited to within 2 months of the survey release. Questions / discussion topics for the focus groups will be formed from the outcomes of the survey in order to consolidate initial findings and deep dive into thematic areas as necessary. There will be audio recordings taken from the focus groups, these will only be used internally to validate annotations and notes taken in written form.

Participation in both the survey and / or the focus group is entirely voluntary. If you decide to take part in either the survey or focus group you may refuse to participate at any point and may refuse to participate or answer questions without having to give any reason.

Confidentiality and Publication:

Data collected from the study will be fully anonymous and aggregated with data from other participants. Therefore, there will not be an option to remove your data from the study once you have submitted responses to the survey or participated in group discussions during focus groups.

Only the researchers on this project will have access to the data collected during the study. This data will not contain your name and you will not be identifiable from responses to the questions, unless you disclose information that puts your confidentiality at risk.

Following analysis of the aggregated data, findings from the study will be published in either a journal or conference proceedings, to be determined after data analysis.

Data collection and Storage:

Participants will be provided a link to the survey by NI Screen. The survey will be delivered using Microsoft Forms. No identifying data (names, email addresses)  will be available to the research team.
