Queen’s University Belfast launched Black History Month on 1 October 2024 with an inspiring opening event, setting the stage for a month-long celebration of Black history, culture, and achievements.

QGI-REC were delighted to host the Vice-Chancellor Prof Sir Ian Greer, Ms Kate Nicholl MLA as well as staff and students at a breakfast event on Wednesday 7 February to mark Race Equality Week 2024.
Race Equality Week took place between 5th – 11th February 2024.

The QGI-REC team invited staff and students to attend a free screening of the 2016 film, ‘Hidden Figures'.

QGI-REC and iRise held the first Academic Progression Workshop for Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic colleagues and colleagues from international backgrounds on Tuesday 30 January 2024.

Queen’s University has held its first ever Race Equality in Higher Education Conference to highlight and support the importance of race equality across the university, the community and wider society.

The launch of the 2023 Race Equality Mentoring Programme was held on Friday 12 May 2023.


Race Equality Week is from 6 to 12 February 2023. Queen's Gender Initiative is offering some suggestions of things Schools could do to endorse racial equity during this week.

The Language Centre and iRise invite all colleagues to join in welcoming the Year of the Rabbit with a variety of cultural events from Friday 20 January, featuring the launch event of the CNY celebration, student-led events and culture talks.

During the academic year 2021/22 the QGI team – supported by the REC Network and iRise – held a number of consultation sessions, that were open to both staff and students, to facilitate discussions on the language that we use at Queen’s.

Colleagues came together at a breakfast event on Tuesday 3rd May 2022 to mark the beginning of our first Reverse Mentoring programme at Queen’s, focused on Racial Equity.

For International Women’s Day 2022, iRise and QGI collaborated to shine a light on some of the brilliant women working and studying at Queen’s.

The QGI Team and Racial Equity Champions Network recently piloted a reverse mentoring programme for QUB staff.

The REC Team invited QUB Staff to attend a Focus Group to share views on preferred terminology in relation to race and ethnicity.
