Apply to access the data
We aim to encourage and facilitate data access with all ‘bona fide’ researchers and research organisations as defined by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) (https://www.ukri.org/) and welcome proposals from researchers, either for collaborative projects or for other forms of data access in order to help advance research knowledge.
Before You Apply
Please read the NICOLA 'Data Access Policy' and 'Sample Access Policy'. The policy explains who can apply, how data are accessed, and the conditions for use.
How to Apply
Follow these five simple steps to access NICOLA data.

Step 1 – Complete the Proposal Form
Please download a copy of the 'Research Proposal Form'. and Application Checklist. Email both documents to nicola-research@qub.ac.uk.
Each project requires its own form.
Step 2 – Data Access Committee Review
Your application will be reviewed by the NICOLA Data Access Committee (DAC), which meets approximately every two months.
You’ll receive a decision within 30 working days of the review meeting.
Please click here for the dates of the Data Access Committee meetings and deadlines for submitting research proposals.
Step 3 – Sign the Access Agreement
Once approved, the Research Support Team will contact you to arrange induction and provide the necessary Data Access Agreement and Confidentiality Form for signature.
Step 4 – Access the Data Securely
Approved researchers will access data through the NICOLA Secure Server (“Safe Setting”) or approved remote access environment.
All analyses must be conducted within this secure setting.
